HIFF Masterclasses

The HIFF Masterclasses connect world-class filmmaking talent with the local community through a series of daytime presentations.

All events are in the BMO Community Room on the 2nd Floor of the Halifax Central Library.

Free for passholders or $10 admission. Passholders RSVP through ticket links below and must show their pass at the event.

Joaquín Cociña

Based in Santiago, Chile, Joaquín Cociña was born in Concepción, Chile in 1980. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Art from the Universidad Católica de Chile. Cociña works independently and also with Cristobal León as a duo. His first full-length feature La Casa Lobo is co-directed with Cristóbal León and screening at HIFF 2019 on Wednesday June 12 at 9pm at Neptune Scotiabank Stage Theatre.

Denis Côté

Join us for a unique opportunity to learn filmmaking approach and technique from Denis Côté, established Québécois filmmaker (née New Brunswick). HIFF is screening his latest feature Répertoire des villes disparues (Ghost Town Anthology) on Thursday June 13 at 9pm at Neptune Scotiabank Stage Theatre.

Khalik Allah

Khalik Allah is a New York-based photographer and filmmaker who describes his work as Camera Ministry. Allah exploded on the film scene in 2015 with the documentary Field Niggas, shot at nighttime on the corner of 125th St. and Lexington Avenue in NYC. Allah’s second feature film Black Mother is an expansion of his unique filmic style. HIFF is screening his latest documentary feature Black Mother on Thursday June 13 at 7pm at Neptune Scotiabank Stage Theatre.

Lisa Jackson

Lisa Jackson is a cross-genre filmmaker whose works have screened at Hotdocs, Tribeca, SXSW, Berlinale and London BFI, and aired on many networks in Canada. Her work has garnered many awards including a Genie and Canadian Screen Award and Playback Magazine named her one of Ten to Watch. She is Anishinaabe, lives in Toronto, and her recent projects include the internationally acclaimed VR Biidaaban: First Light and the short IMAX 3D film Lichen. HIFF is screening a retrospective of her work on Friday June 14 at 7pm.
