These short films were made by Black Canadian filmmakers whose artistry personifies unique ethos and experiences in the pantheon of Canadian cinema. The cinematography and aesthetics of these shorts underlay that the concept of catharsis is profoundly less ideal than subjective. Themes explored span militant wounds (Mariner), the inertia of interpersonality when one faces a love lost (In Your Palm); matrilineal hubris and heartbreak (Fanmi); reclaiming power amidst the contempt of kin (The Deliberate Death of My Father); Blackness as a corporal effigy and exemplar (Black Bodies); and the systemic anti-Blackness that characterizes penal systems (Defund). —Fallen Matthews
