HIFF Newsletter — June 16, 2023

HIFF returns for its 17th edition from June 21–24 in the Light House Arts Centre (1800 Argyle Street) in downtown Halifax. Features from around the world, shorts from around the country, two retrospectives, and intimate and interactive artist talks will pack your days and nights full of innovative independent cinema!

You can see it all with a HIFF Festival Pass ($40/$30 for AFCOOP members) or catch films with single tickets for $14 ($12 for AFCOOP members). Plus, all screenings are FREE for students (with a valid student ID)!

The queer Halifax-based animator James MacSwain has been making films for nearly 50 years. HIFF is proud to present a selection of work spanning his career, some in their original analogue formats.

A Q+A with James will follow the screening, hosted by Eryn Foster, director of Celestial Queer, the forthcoming documentary about his incredible life.

Every year, Atlantic Auteurs showcases the most wild and wonderful films to come out of our region. This year's program features work from every Atlantic province in a staggering variety of styles, from stop-motion and drone work to hand-processed film.

The lineup brings together the genuinely touching, the inventively unsettling, and the abrasively experimental elements that complement each other in a fluid and exciting collection of innovative works by Maritime filmmakers.
